Zurich Sechseläuten: The Böögg is burned in Appenzellerland – News

The Böögg escaped the flames last night. Temporary. It will now be burned in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden.

And it still bothers him! On Monday, the Böögg pulled its head out of the noose and was not lit at Sechseläuten for the first time in over 100 years. In 1923 there was heavy rain, yesterday strong winds were responsible. The flying sparks would have posed too great a safety risk.

A day later, the fate of the Zurich snowman is now sealed. It will definitely be burned on Ausserrhoder soil. This is confirmed by Peter Zeller, OK President of the Sechseläuten event in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. However, it is not yet clear where and when this will be the case.

Various venues are being examined, says Peter Zeller. But a decision won’t be made until next week.

“It’s all still very fresh now,” Zeller told Radio SRF. But he had already exchanged ideas with the central committee of the guilds and now had to look for a suitable location. “There are definitely 2,000 guild members coming from Zurich to Appenzellerland. Therefore we need to have a place with enough parking spaces. A place where there are lots of people.”

Schwagalp? Or who will win?

Schlägalp, a tourist magnet below the Säntis, is likely to be in pole position. “Everything would be available on the Schwagalp,” says Zeller. Also for Zurich residents who didn’t want to go home straight away. But, says Zeller: “It’s a variant.” Others are on the Gäbris, the Waldegg near Teufen or the Rechberg near Herisau.

The favorite for the Böögg burning is Schwägalp, which would provide the necessary infrastructure as a tourism hotspot.

“We now have to carefully clarify the options,” says Zeller. “Ultimately, we also have to make sure that we don’t have any sparks.” The decision is likely to be made next week, after which a meeting with those responsible is planned.

This is not the first time that Böögg has been in exile

The Böögg has now been dismantled and is now in a warehouse. The Central Committee of the Guilds (ZZZ) is also pleased that the Zurich Snowman is now making his way to Appenzellerland. Spokesman Victor Rosser says: “I don’t think we would have received Sechseläutenplatz from the city again.”

The details are now being clarified, says Rosser. The venue must meet safety criteria. And the event shouldn’t take place too late. “We can’t predict summer until fall,” says Rosser.

So time is running out. After all, Böög is used to traveling to another canton. Three years ago, for example, during the Corona pandemic, it was not burned in Zurich, but in the Schöllenen Gorge in the canton of Uri.
