The Chinese President today asked the Indian Prime Minister that the two countries “resolve their conflicts”, in a meeting held in the Russian city of Kazan, which constituted the first formal meeting between the two in four years.
Xi Jinping argued that both China and India “are ancient civilizations, large developing countries and important members of the Global South”, said the Chinese Presidency, in a statement published by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
Furthermore, Xi stated that “the two countries are at a critical juncture of modernization” and that both China and India “correctly understand the trend of history and the direction of development of relations between the two states, which is beneficial to two countries and peoples”.
The Chinese leader pointed out the need for Beijing and New Delhi to “assume their international responsibilities and set an example for developing countries by uniting and strengthening themselves” contributing to “the promotion of a multipolar world and the democratization of international relations” .
Tension between China and India, the two biggest powers in the Indo-Pacific, has been growing since 2020, when an illegal Chinese military deployment led to an Indian response that degenerated into a border clash in the Himalayan territory of Ladakh.
Since then, the powers have increased their military presence and hostility, but recently announced an agreement to calm the situation.
The Asian giants maintain a historic dispute over some regions of the Himalayas, such as Aksai Chin, managed by China and claimed by India, and several places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, where the situation is reversed.
Russia hosts, in the Republic of Kazan, the summit of the BRICS, the group of countries that represent the largest emerging economies in the world, which includes, in addition to Russia, Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Iran , Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.
