With a deluge of 3-pointers, the B team of the Warriors pays the Cavaliers!

This one, you had to see it coming! In « back-to-back » after an overtime loss the day before in Boston, the Warriors showed up at Clevelandthe last leg of a five-game road trip before returning to California, without Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Greenleft to rest.

A priori, faced with Riders « only » deprived of Donovan Mitchellwe could thus expect a one-sided match to the advantage of the locals, against defending champions already concentrated on the reception of Brooklyn in San Francisco, Sunday evening.

And yet, the (young) men of Steve Kerr managed to create a surprise by imposing themselves with style in Ohio, in particular under the impetus of a Jordan Poole convincing in the center of the attack (32 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists), at the end of a game that they simply dominated overall (the Cavaliers only led in scoring twice) . Even if the Cavaliers, thanks to a « run » in the last act, returned to two possessions in the « money-time » (114-110 two minutes from the end), then maintaining, for a short time, the hope of a « hold-up ».

The key to the match was not far to seek: the « Dubs » built their success in attack, as paradoxical as it may seem without the executives. Uninhibited, the young Warriors actually opted for the easy trigger strategy, and it paid off: a huge 23/43 behind the arc in particular (including 5 for Jordan Poole, 4 for Anthony Lamb and 3 for Ty Jerome and Donte DiVincenzo), or 54% success in this exercise!

Far from being clumsy (50% on shots including 42% from behind the arc), the Cavaliers were simply blown away by the outward address of their opponents, who disgusted them. Like these two technical faults given to Raúl Neto and JB Bickerstaff in the third quarter, annoyed by officiating decisions, while everything was going well for the Warriors in the meantime.

This meeting was quite simply an “upset”, and it is obviously a very good operation by the defending champions, who once again balance their record at 23 wins, for as many defeats.

WHAT YOU MUST REMEMBER

Kevon Looney, symbol of these intrepid Warriors. The only usual holder present in the in-between, the Warriors pivot was probably the MVP of this match. Because if Jordan Poole spent the match in the light by feeding the attack, Kevon Looney spent it in the shadows, shining in the thankless but oh so important tasks. In particular by capturing 17 rebounds in the paint, including 6 offensive rebounds. Almost as much as the entire Cleveland team, which only grabbed 10 offensive rebounds. Thanks to his efforts, his teammates were able to benefit from many second chances, and in particular many open shots behind the arc, when the Cleveland defense had not had time to recover, « Loon » being particularly quick to pull out the leather off. If the exteriors of the Warriors scored 23 award-winning shots, Kevon Looney, by his slaughter in the racket, has a lot to do with it.

A glimpse of the future. Without Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson or Draymond Green, this match effectively gave a glimpse of what the future of the Warriors could be, in a few years when this « Big Three » will have hung up the « sneakers ». A future obviously centered around Jordan Poole, first option in attack without the veterans, but also Jonathan Kuminga, precious with 10 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists, and some useful « role-players » who could settle in the Warriors over time, like Donte DiVincenzo (17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals), or Ty Jerome (22 points and 8 assists) and Anthony Lamb (12 points and 2 assists). But above all, more broadly, a future around Steve Kerr and his polished offensive system, capable of breaking the lock on any opposing defense when it is well executed, regardless of the personnel on the ground.

TOPS.FLOPS

Jordan Poole. We knew “JP” would be in the center of the attack, without the “Big Three”, but Cleveland’s defense, second best in the league (110.2 points conceded on 100 possessions), was still a big challenge on paper. . Forty-eight minutes later: challenge certainly successful for the will-o’-the-wisp of the defending champions. Always a little too greedy and rushed at times (10/23 and 5 ball losses), Jordan Poole nevertheless distinguished himself well in the center of his team’s offensive phases, scoring 32 points (5/12 to 3- points, 7/8 on free throws).

✅⛔️ Darius Garland. Without Donovan Mitchell, the Cavaliers point guard was alone in command of his team’s attack. As always, he came out of it without much harm, compiling 31 points and 9 assists. But because of his high volume of play with the leather in his hands, he nevertheless lost 4 balls, and was not particularly skilful (10/25 including 3/11 from afar).

⛔️ Jarrett Allen. Disappointing exit from the Cleveland pivot, too timid in the face of a Warriors racket that is not very vertical. Fairly little used when the leather left the hands of Darius Garland, he did not really weigh in attack (8 points on 7 shots), and especially suffered on both sides of the field in the racket, facing the rebound vacuum cleaner Kevon Looney, who finished the match with 9 more strikes than him.
