Volvo EX90 for the first time in the Czech Republic: Zen interior, future technology and Czech prices

The flagship of the Swedish car company has finally presented itself live. The giant electric SUV, whose priorities are safety and comfort, will go on sale here in the second half of the year. At the same time, the price tag will not be so cosmic.

Recently, the Volvo brand introduced its enthusiasm for electrification with its smallest model, the EX30, which caused a great response. Now we have the largest model for a change – a seven-seater family SUV called the EX90. It comes to the model line as a successor to the popular XC90, but both cars will be sold simultaneously for some time to come.

The EX90, for which we have waited a year and a half since the first presentation, is now finally physically in the Czech Republic, and during the ceremonial unveiling in the impressive premises of the deconsecrated church of St. Anna in Prague, we were able to thoroughly inspect and touch it. What can we look forward to?

Safety first

“The safest Volvo ever and possibly the safest car ever.” Alican Emiroğlu, CEO of Volvo Car CR, introduced the news with these words. Thanks to the latest external and internal sensor technologies, the Volvo EX90 will protect its passengers with an invisible protective shield. Its most important part is the LiDAR laser sensor, a laser radar with an extremely long range – up to 250 meters, both day and night. It is supplemented by cameras, radars and ultrasonic sensors, the total number of sensors is 33. Artificial intelligence helps with the analysis of the huge amount of data collected in this way. The advantage of these technologies is the fact that, unlike the driver, they do not lose their attention even for a moment and also their reaction time is significantly faster compared to a human.

The invisible protective shield also works inside the car. Sensors and cameras are able to recognize and measure the degree of concentration of the human gaze, thereby being able to detect the lack of concentration or fatigue of the driver. First it alerts him gently, then more forcefully, and if there is no reaction, the car stops safely and can call for help.

Comfort on board

The Volvo EX90 cabin can seat up to seven passengers, although the third row is more suitable for children. In addition, there is a generous trunk and a box under the front hood, in which you can conveniently store cabling and a few other small items. The precisely crafted interior is in the spirit of Scandinavian minimalism, and every minute spent with the soft seats will be a pleasure. Volvo engineers paid special attention to soundproofing the cabin – thanks to a special noise-absorbing foam, the EX90 promises to be half as noisy as the XC90. The sound of the Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system with 25 speakers and a total output of 1,610 W stands out even more.

Air suspension takes care of driving comfort, while temperature comfort is ensured by the four-zone air conditioning with air purifier.

Performance and range

The Volvo EX90 will be sold here in three purely electric power variants and in three trim levels. The basic Core equipment is standard, followed by Plus, and the Ultra equipment is at the top. Assistance and safety systems with a LiDAR sensor, a panoramic roof, a heat pump, an 11kW on-board charger and adaptive cruise control will be standard on all cars.

The basic engine is represented by the Single Motor with an output of 205 kW (279 hp) and a torque of 490 newton meters. All-wheel drive is available in the Twin Motor version with a power of 300 kW (408 hp) and a torque of 770 newton meters and Twin Motor Performance with 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 newton meters. The latter version is the most powerful production Volvo ever produced, and accelerates from 0 to 100 in 4.9 seconds.

All variants will receive a high-voltage battery with a usable capacity of 104 kWh and a charging power of 250 kW. According to the WLTP standard, the indicated range is up to 600 kilometers.

With regard to the environment

The Volvo brand has been known for many years for its emphasis on sustainability and ecology. In terms of materials used, the Volvo EX90 contains around 15% recycled steel, 25% recycled aluminium, as well as 48 kilograms of recycled plastics and bio-based materials. However, that is far from all. The car company reduces its carbon footprint, for example, by using fuel from renewable sources when transporting cars from factories to customers, another subject of interest is the recycling and reuse of batteries as energy storage. New technologies allow not only longer battery life, but also the possibility of easier repairs in case of local damage.

Although the price tag of the new EX90 is by no means popular, it was managed to be kept approximately at the level of the current XC90 model. The basic single-motor version with rear-wheel drive (it will appear in the menu with a slight delay) starts at 2,104,900 CZK, the weaker four-wheeler starts at 2,319,900 CZK and the Twin Motor Performance costs 2,449,900 CZK in the Core equipment up to 2,709,900 CZK in Ultra trim. Compared to other premium cars of a similar class, the novelty thus maintains solid competitiveness.
