Unusual Sky Amid Lightning and Thunderstorm: ‘Looked Like Apocalypse’

A video of a “weird sky” with a “sepia tone” captured during a thunderstorm has stunned viewers on TikTok.

The clip was shared by @chloeepatrick and amassed over 830,000 views since it was shared on October 10.

The video was taken in Burnaby, a city in the Canadian province of British Columbia that forms part of the Metro Vancouver area, according to a location shared with the post.

The footage begins with a note across the clip that reads, “I was just trying to get a video of the sky.”

A person opens a sliding door and walks onto a balcony, where a cloudy, orange-tinted sky is shown amid heavy rainfall. A voice off-camera is heard gasping as lightning strikes, and a roar of thunder is heard before the person swiftly closes the door in panic.

The viral post comes after heavy rain and wind were forecast to impact the north and central coasts of British Columbia last weekend.

“Much of the area has already seen between 500 & 700 mm of rain since mid Sept,” ECCC Weather British Columbia, Canada’s official weather and climate source, said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on October 10.

A flood watch was in effect on October 11 for the Kitimat River, including its tributaries and other creeks in the region, as well as for the tributaries of the Kemano River, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Land, Water and Resource Stewardship at the British Columbia government website.

Weather forecast models said at the time, “The Kitimat and Kemano regions may see the greatest impact from the upcoming storm with flows possibly reaching a 5-year return period or higher,” the ministry noted.

A high stream flow advisory was also issued for tributaries in parts of the north and central coasts, the inland tributaries as well as for some tributaries around North Vancouver Island, the ministry said at the time.

‘I Was Freaking Out’

Viewers on TikTok were alarmed by the striking footage in the viral clip.

Crystal said, “It looked like apocalypse just before this thunder and lightening!”

MordSith wrote, “my camera couldn’t capture the sepia tone! I was freaking out too!”

User trishinthewoods said, “Omg what a weird sky, I was driving east on lougheed and could barely see in front of me but there was blue sky behind me!!!”

User sloubee said, “I heard that! i jumped so hard! it was SO LOUD it vibrated my windows and the floor… crazy.”

Calea_Zaca8 agreed, saying, “Dude that was insane I saw it too and felt it.”

Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.
