Universal announces live-action LEGO movies from Patty Jenkins, Jake Kasdan and Joe Cornish

Having launched their movie partnership with LEGO this past month to positive reviews but disappointing box office returns with the animated Pharrell Williams biopic Piece By Piece, Universal Pictures looks to be switching strategy with the iconic toy license and has now announced three live-action LEGO movies are on the horizon.

Titles and plots for the projects are being kept under wraps for the time being, but the three movies are set to be directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) respectively.

Jenkins is set to direct her film from a script she’s penned with former DC chief Geoff Johns (Wonder Woman 1984), while Kasdan’s project has been written by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul (The D Train) based on an original idea and previous draft by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows (The Pickup) and Cornish is currently rewriting a previous draft by Heather Anne Campbell (Rick & Morty) from a treatment by Simon Rich (Miracle Workers).

LEGO first made the jump to the big screen in partnership with Warner Bros. in 2014 with the release of The LEGO Movie, spawning a franchise that was followed by The LEGO Batman Movie, The LEGO Ninjago Movie and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. However, the rights reverted back to LEGO following the disappointing box office returns of the latter, with Universal subsequently acquiring the movie license in 2020.
