Unemployment in Cyprus is stable at 6.6%, above the EU average

In Cyprus, the unemployment rate among women stood at 7.2%, down from 7.0%, while among men it stood at 6.1%, up from 6.2% last month.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Cyprus remained stable at 6.6% in August 2023 compared to July, with a slight decrease compared to August 2022, when it was 6.8%, according to data published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

In the eurozone the unemployment rate stood at 6.4% in August, down from 6.5% in July and from 6.7% in August 2022. In the EU the rate stood at 5.9% in August 2023, up from 6, 0% in July and from 6.1% in August 2022.

According to Eurostat estimates, the number of unemployed in the EU in August stood at 12.837 million, of which 10.856 million were in the eurozone. Compared to July, unemployment decreased by 112 thousand in the EU and by 107 thousand in the eurozone. Compared to August 2022, unemployment fell by 335 thousand in the EU and by 407 thousand in the eurozone.

In Cyprus, the number of unemployed in August reached 33 thousand, with the number remaining stable compared to July and last August.

Comparison between the sexes

The unemployment rate among EU women in August stood at 6.2%, flat from July 2023. The unemployment rate for men was 5.7% in August, also flat from the previous month.

In the euro zone, the jobless rate for women was 6.7%, down from 6.8% in July, and the jobless rate for men was 6.1%, also down from 6.2% the previous month.

In Cyprus, the unemployment rate among women stood at 7.2%, down from 7.0%, while among men it stood at 6.1%, up from 6.2% last month.

Unemployment among young people

In the category of young people (under 25 years old) 2.687 million unemployed people were registered in the EU, of which 2.194 million in the euro area. In August 2023, the youth unemployment rate stood at 14.0% in the EU, unchanged from July 2023, and 13.8% in the euro area, up from 13.9% the previous month.

Compared to July 2023, youth unemployment fell by 10,000 in the EU and by 24,000 in the eurozone. Compared to August 2022, youth unemployment fell by 141,000 in the EU and by 145,000 in the eurozone.

For Cyprus, there are no updated figures regarding youth unemployment, as they are published quarterly.
