“This year, it didn’t stop until the last week of December, which was the best of the year”, says proudly Karl Laurentresponsible for Villa Montebello Museum at Trouville sur Mer (Calvados). In 2022the Trouvillais museum made a record yearpassing the course of 20,000 visitors. “The last record dated back to 2001 with just over 18,000 visitors,” he recalls.

14,000 visitors for Courbet

This record is no stranger to the reception of the exhibition on Gustave Courbet “From the Source to the Ocean” which offered a journey through the landscapes of the leader of the realist current, between Franche-Comté and Normandy from July 2 to December 31. “The figures are exceptional, we would never have thought of doing so much”, rejoices Sylvie de Gaetano. Around 14,000 visitors went to see this exhibition, including 1,000 schoolchildren who went there. “It’s priceless because we always want to involve young people in these cultural events,” says the city councilor.

In terms of geographical origin, the visitors were “essentially passing tourists” coming in particular from the Paris region.

With Gustave Courbet, we noted that we had more local visitors, Trouvillais and Normans, than the previous year. It proves that they are ready to come when the offer is interesting.

Figures that confirm the museum and the municipality to continue to offer major new exhibitionslike the one that will start in March, From Casa de Velázquez to Normandy. “It encourages us to continue in this direction,” smiles the museum manager. This exhibition, placed under the high patronage of the Ambassador of Spain, will bring together for the first time 28 Norman artists who have all passed, between 1928 and today, through this French institution based in Madrid.
