Tohá distances himself from Yáñez’s statements about constituent processes

The Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, referred this Wednesday to the statements of the general director of the Carabineros, Ricardo Yanezregarding the role that the institution had during the social outbreak.

According to Yáñez -who It will be formalized in October for the omissive crime of illegitimate coercion resulting in serious injuries and homicide due to events that occurred in the October 2019 demonstrations, police officials “they were up to the challenges, beyond specific errors they may have made; of excesses that may have occurred and that are being investigated.”

“If it had not been for Carabineros, we would not have had a transition from one presidential command to another, we would not have had two constituent assemblies (Convention and Constitutional Council) and we would not have a democratic country like the one we have today”he assured yesterday in an interview with Mega.

Under this framework, the head of the Interior, when asked about it by the press, stated that “we are not going to make this a debate.”

“Let’s say something that any Chilean, when they review that period, can realize that in Chile all the institutions and all the people were very challenged, that it was a complex period, that we did our best to get ahead and managed to avoid situations very dramatic things that could have happened,” he added.

Along these lines, he maintained that “there were certainly also things that did not work out as we would have liked. No one is satisfied with how this process ended up developing and concluding, but without a doubt, everyone made their greatest effort, everyone made their greatest contribution and we all feel that we have to improve so that in the future we do not experience a crisis of that magnitude again.”

This same position was expressed by the government spokesperson minister, Camila Vallejowho pointed out during the morning that “The entire constituent process was built by different political actors (…) it is evident that a democracy is sustained by multiple actors.”
