They started as car repairmen, now they build ultralights and replicas of historic aircraft

They wanted to fly, so they built a plane. Just like that, for yourselves. They succeeded, so it was no wonder that others soon noticed their skills and started ordering planes from them. Father and son Drahošová (both Miroslavás) from Trutnov had no idea at that moment that they would become recognized manufacturers of ultralight aircraft from car repairers.

Since the 1990s, they have been repairing cars in one workshop, and building at the same time aircraft or modified engines for them. But with each additional aircraft ordered, it became clear that there was no point in doing both.

“It broke around 2005. Airplanes definitely replaced cars,” Miroslav Drahoš Jr. recalls. So he and his father left work and the hobby that made them famous in the region. They also produced autocross buggies in the workshop and even competed in them at national competitions on weekends.

But when they flew for the first time in an ultralight about a quarter of a century ago, they got excited about a different pastime. They wanted to get their own plane, but they didn’t want to spend on it. It occurred to them that if they could build buggies, they could also build airplanes. All they had to do was get the documents and plans, the necessary material and components, and they could get to work. “Our first plane was the Tramp. It would be a great experience to fly through it. He flew flawlessly,” recalls Miroslav Drahoš Jr.

As soon as other aviation enthusiasts learned about the skills of the father and son from Trutnov, the first orders began to go to the Drahošs, and more were added. They have already made dozens thanks to it ultralights – most of them fly all over Europe. “We never had to pay for advertising or find customers. They always contacted us themselves,” says Drahoš the elder.

At first glance, their workshop stands out from the modern type of factories. In one part, the structure, fuselage and wings are ready. In the second, the chassis is prepared and next to it the engine, which they are currently modifying for the customer.

“Some people only order an engine from us. They need to modify it so that it can be placed well on the plane and put a propeller on it. Others bring the hull and want us to build the engine into it. And we will comply with them,” Drahoš the elder explains.

Dozens of Tulak-type aircraft from their workshop ply the skies over Europe. Among the most attractive are replicas of period airplanes. For example, they built famous fighters Yakov-lev Yak-3 and Yak-11. They also produced the Bücker Jungman biplane, a legendary training and courier machine from 1934. “It took us about a year, roughly 1,500 hours. Then we made another twelve Bückers, there is interest in them,” Drahoš the younger points out.

They sold five machines to Spain, and made one for themselves. They like to fly in it, even though, unlike other ultralights, it does not have a closed cabin. “You sit in a machine with seats placed behind each other, in an open cockpit, with a hood and goggles on your head. It’s a magical experience,” admits the elder Drahoš.

Although father and son have been building ultralights for 25 years, they follow the same manufacturing processes. “There is a lot of work, but we are not mass production. We produce on our knees, so to speak, and we are certainly not ashamed of that label,” emphasizes the younger Drahoš.

Locals even compare their actions to the work of aviation pioneer and aircraft designer Igo Etrich. He also lived and worked in Trutnov in modest conditions. And he was also always the first to take off with a new machine.

“Every plane from our workshop is tested by a test pilot with a stamp, but I or my dad are usually the very first to take off with it,” admits Miroslav Drahoš Jr. “We enjoy flying and building airplanes. We combined hobbies with work,” adds the elder Drahoš.
