Race director Fabian Wegmann’s anticipation was clear in the run-up to this year’s edition of the Eschborn-Frankfurt cycling race actually only slightly clouded by one thing. Since it was pouring rain at the time of the official press conference last week, the ex-professional sent a worried look and warm words to heaven. “Everything is in place for an exciting race. I just hope that the weather will cooperate now,” he said.

It can now be said that the weather will cooperate and, with temperatures over 20 degrees, will provide the right setting for the next Hessian cycling holiday on May 1st. The fear of potentially slippery roads is unfounded; fans and drivers can look forward to a competition in perfect conditions. 203 kilometers through the Taunus and the Frankfurt area – and in the end the best driver that day will win. But who could that be?

The demands on the winner are high

“The race is really difficult. You have to be a fully capable driver to win here,” said Wegmann, summarizing the potential winner’s requirements profile in an interview with hr-sport. Since the route again includes two crossings of the Feldberg and three times of the Mammolshainer Berg, the chances for breakaway groups are good this year too. This means: climbing skills are definitely an advantage. “You have to be strong in the mountains,” says Wegmann. “Strong mountain sprinters have the best chances,” added ex-professional Marcel Kittel, who acts as a co-commentator for hr.

Someone who meets exactly these requirements is last year’s winner Sören Kragh Andersen. The Dane proved last year that he has the strength to pull away from the field and then has enough power to crown a possible escape with victory. Kragh Andersen may not have had an outstanding season so far, but he is still a hot contender to defend his title. “He is the top favorite for me,” emphasized local hero John Degenkolb.

Hirschu and Van Gils are hotly traded

The Swiss Marc Hirschi is also hotly traded. The 25-year-old, who came fourth last year and decisively tore the field apart when he started at Mammolshainer Berg, is currently one of the strongest drivers and is feared above all because of his explosiveness. “When he drives off, everyone has a knife on their neck,” said Degenkolb, describing Hirschi’s particular strengths. The Swiss champions are a force to be reckoned with. The Belgian Maxim Van Gils also belongs to the top favorites. “He’s really made a fortune in the last few weeks,” praises Kittel.

From a German perspective, Nils Politt in particular, who took third place at the Tour of Flanders and narrowly missed the podium with fourth place at Paris-Roubaix, should have a good chance of a top placement. Max Schachmann can also have hope. “The race should suit him very much,” said Kittel. “He can survive the competition and stay at the front.” The Hessian duo Degenkolb, who is not in top form after a two-week injury break, and Jonasrutsch are among the secret favorites.

Record winner Kristoff is also lurking

And then of course there is Alexander Kristoff, who triumphed in Frankfurt in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018. The more difficult course is not entirely to the Norwegian’s taste, but the record winner should not be missing from the list of favorites. “Overall, the race is very open,” said Kittel. “It’s about getting over the mountains well and then sprinting in a small group.” It definitely sounds easier than it is.
