CULTURE – A new step forward. The scaffolding around the spire Notre Dame de Paris were removed this Monday, February 12, allowing the needle and the rooster which surmount the cathedral.

The spire was placed on the cathedral last November, an important step in the reconstruction of the building ravaged by a fire in April 2019. In its final weeks, the cross then the rooster overlooking the building were installed. Finally, the lead cover was laid, despite the controversies.

“For the installation of the spire, a 600-ton scaffolding with 48 levels was erected: a clever and complex construction closely intertwined with the framework, which allowed the construction of the spire without hindering its assembly”, explains Paris City Hall on its website. Once the work is completed, this scaffolding is now being removed little by little.'

The spire which stands at 96 meters was rebuilt identical to that of the architect Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century. Symbol of the cathedral, its fall during the fire was a shock.

The reopening of Notre-Dame is scheduled for December 8, 2024, after the Paris Olympics in the summer, a date confirmed by Emmanuel Macron end of August. A masterpiece of Gothic art admired around the world, Notre-Dame de Paris welcomed 12 million visitors on average each year before the fire.
