As a group, the SEC went 11-3 in Week 1, which is of course a very solid overall record.
However, those three losses are noteworthy. They cover all three games in which an SEC team faced a ranked opponent from another conference.
On Thursday night, Florida fell at No. 14 Utah, 24-11, which was followed by No. 21 North Carolina beating South Carolina 31-17 on Saturday night.
Finally, No. 5 LSU was taken to the woodshed in the second half by No. 8 Florida State in primetime on Sunday, with the Seminoles registering a resounding 45-24 win.
Fans from other conferences are taking some early pleasure in the SEC’s struggles against quality opponents in Week 1.
“Another year of OVERRATED SEC teams being beaten by ACC teams. LSU wasn’t a #5 team in the nation. They had the rank, but off of SEC bias. Good win for the Noles,” said one Miami fan.

“I’m not saying the SEC is overrated, but the 3 SEC schools that played actual teams and not schools of the blind all lost this week,” said another commenter.

What does this all mean? Not much right now.
It’s still only the first weekend of the season, and three frontline SEC teams (No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Alabama and No. 12 Tennessee) all blew out inferior opponents in Week 1.
It will take us a little more time to discern if the SEC is truly “overrated,” but that won’t stop people from having fun with the narrative right now.
