The most important thing about Eintracht-Leverkusen: The record series should break |

Eintracht Frankfurt can take a giant step towards the Europa League against Bayer Leverkusen and then even dream of the premier class. However, the Hessians should refrain from playing time games and premature celebrations. The most important thing about the game.

Eintracht Frankfurt scores in the penultimate home game of the season on Sunday (5:30 p.m.) against the German champions Bayer Leverkusen. For the hosts it’s about Europe, for the guests it’s about their series.

Eintracht Frankfurt has the chance against Bayer Leverkusen to take a decisive step closer to their big goal of the Europa League. With a win, the gap to seventh place and SC Freiburg would increase to seven points. The champagne cork could then pop straight after the final whistle.

The big problem with this project, however, is the opponent. The German champions from Leverkusen have been unbeaten for a whopping 47 games in a row and proved their extra class, not least in the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday in Rome. Coach Xabi Alonso’s high-flyers currently seem invincible.

But if Eintracht actually manages to maintain or even expand their lead over their pursuers, sales of black and yellow fan paraphernalia in Hesse could skyrocket overnight. Should BVB, who won the semi-final first leg against Paris St. Germain 1-0, actually win the Champions League, Eintracht would qualify for the premier class in sixth place.

Eintracht coach Dino Toppmöller can take full advantage against the Werkself and send what is supposed to be the best team onto the pitch. Hugo Larsson is a candidate for the starting eleven.

This is how Eintracht could play:

This is what Eintracht could do against Leverkusen.

There are no personnel problems with the guests either. Between the two semi-finals in the Europa League, Bayer coach Alonso, who will not sit on the bench due to a yellow card suspensionbut probably rotate through.

This is how Leverkusen could play: Hradecky – Kossounou, Tah, Hincapie – Tella, Palacios, Xhaka, Grimaldo – Hofmann, Boniface, Adli

Dino Toppmöller: “It’s a nice incentive for us to be the first team to beat Bayer. We know it will be a very high hurdle. But we feel ready. The key will be that we have maximum discipline in our defensive behavior “I think we’ll have our chances in the transition game.”

Xabi Alonso: “It’s never easy playing in Frankfurt. Of course everyone wants to beat us. But we want to stay undefeated. We know this is getting more difficult every week. But the goal is big.”

At Eintracht, coach Toppmöller emphasized at the press conference, the most important thing will be defense. Robin Koch, Willian Pacho and Tuta, which have been wobbling from time to time in the past few weeks, have to build on the good performances from the first half of the season. Otherwise you could be in for a rude awakening.

On the Leverkusen side, the talent of the century Florian Wirtz and organizer Granit Xhaka stand out from the consistently very strong squad. According to Toppmöller, neither should be given “free rein.” Otherwise, you guessed it, there could be a rude awakening.

Against no other opponent does the phrase that the game is only over when the referee blows the whistle reflect reality as accurately as against Bayer Leverkusen. This year’s high-flyers have scored 21 goals after the 86th minute across all competitions, 13 of which came in stoppage time. Even with a two-goal lead, Eintracht should do everything they can to ensure that the game ends as quickly as possible after the end of the regular playing time. In other words: no time game and definitely no excessive celebration. Bayer is turning around the games this season faster than other clubs in Germany are receiving rejections from potential new coaches. Eintracht has to be careful.
