The invitation to open the World Health Assembly (and talk about mental health) that Boric rejected due to the public account

On Monday, May 27, in Geneva, Switzerland, the World Health Assembly will be held in which various authorities and international figures will participate and where the World Health Organization (WHO) presents and details the annual reports.

On this occasion, the WHO invited President Gabriel Boric to speak on mental health at the opening of the Assembly, but since the date was so close to June 1, he will be absent.

“The President of Chile, in fact, unfortunately could not go, but he was invited to open the World Health Assembly to speak about mental health. And since he is so close to the July 1st speech he couldn’t go,” commented the Minister of Health, Ximena Aguilera, in an interview with LT Domingo.

The invitation was confirmed by the President’s teams.

The Secretary of State will travel to Geneva on May 29, after a month that has been complex due to the processing of the short Isapres bill that will be resolved this day in Congress.

According to sources from the Ministry of Health, the President, through the minister, has generated a direct relationship with Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the WHO. In fact, the two met in Geneva last year and wrote a column on mental health for TIME magazine.

Boric, at least in the media, has sought to approach issues related to mental health, which was one of his main slogans in his presidential campaign, by publicly addressing that he suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which he reported in his periods. as a parliamentarian.

“I wanted to tell you that I am on leave for a couple of weeks. As I have said before, I have had OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) since I was a child and on medical recommendation I decided to be responsible and treat it. By the way, my team in Valpo and Magallanes continues to work hard. It would be good if later we talk more about OCD and mental health in general, because I know that it happens to many people and it is a topic that is rarely addressed,” he wrote on October 3, 2018 on his Instagram account.

In fact, on December 22, 2023, he arrived late for an activity due to being in psychological therapy. “I think we have to take care of mental health, it is important to say (…) so that friends on social networks don’t mess around, The therapies can be normal, periodically, it is not an exceptional event,” said the President.

In any case, the President has still received criticism for the progress in his commitment to advance the matter.

This weekend, the President participated in an exhibition at the relaunch of the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Center (Corfapes) in the Yungay neighborhood.
