The General Assembly approved the proposal for Palestine’s membership in the United Nations. The Czech Republic was against it

The UN General Assembly passed a resolution that Palestine should become a full member of the organization. The approved motion says it is ready to do so and calls on the UN Security Council to approve such a move. Last month in the Security Council, the possibility of Palestinian membership in the world organization was vetoed by the United States.

At the session of the General Assembly, 143 countries spoke in favor of the document, 25 abstained, and eight other countries voted against it in addition to the Czech Republic. Palestine, which has the status of an observer country in the UN, the text also grants new rights, such as the possibility to join other UN bodies, the world media reports.

The change will take effect in the next session of the General Assembly, which begins in September. The Palestinians will then be able to submit proposals and amendments themselves, for which they still need the cooperation of other countries, she stated France 24 television. However, they will still not be able to vote or become a member of the UNSC.

Are Palestinians the most educated nation? A number of falsehoods were heard in the televised debate

Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Kac described the empowerment as a reward for the Palestinian terrorist movement Hamas, with whom Israel has been at war in the Gaza Strip for the past months. He called the position of the General Assembly absurd, Reuters reported.

In addition to the Czech Republic and Israel, Argentina, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea and the USA were against the proposal. A number of European countries, including Austria, Germany, Italy and Ukraine, abstained from the vote, while China, Russia, India and Slovakia supported the idea of Palestinian membership.

In order for Palestine to become the 194th member of the UN, the admission proposal would first have to be approved by the Security Council. In April, such a proposal received the support of 12 of the 15 members of this body; The United States, as one of the five permanent members with the right of veto, however, rejected it, while Britain and Switzerland abstained. The result was welcomed by Israel, while the Palestinian Authority, based in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, condemned it.

The emergence of a Palestinian state

The Palestinians have been striving for UN membership for a long time, they obtained the observer position in 2012. The self-government requested a new discussion of the issue at the beginning of April. The move comes at a time of heightened tensions in the West Bank over the ongoing construction of Jewish settlements, as well as Israel’s war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, another part of the planned Palestinian state.

Its creation, regardless of the result of today’s vote, is also supported by the USA and the Czech Republic. According to Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, the resolution adopted today attempts to circumvent established procedures for accepting new members to the UN. “This is contrary to the intention of the UN Charter, and therefore the Czech Republic could not support the resolution,” said the head of Czech diplomacy in a statement sent to ČTK.

According to the UN Charter, potential new members must be a “peaceful” entity. The AP noted that the term was dropped from the resolution before today’s vote. The text nevertheless invites Security Councilto reconsider Palestinian membership and take a positive stance towards it.

If the 15-member body were to vote on the matter again soon, the result would most likely be the same as in April, Reuters wrote. Washington currently refuses to recognize a Palestinian state in any form other than a bilateral agreement between the Palestinians and Israel. And the current government of the Jewish state unequivocally rejects the creation of a sovereign Palestine.

The head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, said that he will continue to strive for full membership in the United Nations. According to him, the result of today’s vote shows that the world is on the side of the Palestinians and against the Israeli occupation.
