“I have fought and kickboxing from 12 to 19 years old. I was eager to return to ring, to train and transform my body. Christy’s story is not exactly light, it is physically and mentally very demanding, but I love to challenge myself… I feel compelled to tell the story of a woman who faced so many adversities and she did not let them defeat her.” These were the words with which Sydney Sweeney agreed to interpret to boxer Christy Martinwithin what could be the most difficult project of his career.
Today Sweeney is considered one of the most promising actresses in Hollywood. After appearing on television with Euphoria and The White Lotusthe star took control of her career by founding her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Filmsand alternate a film that I had been wanting to put together for years (Immaculate) with one of the surprise hits of 2024: the romantic comedy Anyone but younext to Glen Powell. This year has also arrived Madame Web (about which we won’t say anything), and Sweeney has agreed to star alongside Amanda Seyfried The assistantbased on the best seller namesake.
And also, of course, there has been the Christy Martin thing. Sweeney surprised everyone and everyone when she announced it, because this athlete couldn’t look less like her and was clearly going to need demanding physical preparation. The actress agreed to play her in a biopic in charge of David Michod (director of war machine either The Kingthat historical drama with Timothée Chalamet), and during these months he has been training while needing an elaborate characterization. In the first photos that we receive from the filming we can already see her, then, with the inevitable makeup along with the wig and prosthesis.

Wow, Sweeney is unrecognizable in a project that seems to have required all of his enthusiasm. He biopicwhich does not yet have an official title, tells the story of the famous athlete, who rose to stardom in the 90s as the most famous boxer in the United States. They nicknamed her “Rocky Woman” and it was the only one that appeared on the cover of Sports Illustratedalthough unfortunately these professional achievements masked a turbulent personal life. Martin had been abused as a child, and was a lesbian woman trapped in a marriage with a man, Jim Martinwho was also her coach and not only mistreated her, but even tried to murder her.
These chilling events were recently reported in a documentary by Netflix, Sports secrets: Pact with the devilreleased in 2021. It is to be hoped that Sweeney’s film, still without a release date, does not omit the most painful details of Christy Martin’s life.
