Sydney Sweeney has spoken out following criticism from producer Carol Baum against her.
PEOPLE – Since her role as Cassie in Euphoria (2019-ongoing), Sydney Sweeney has only increased her popularity. Starring in the first season of the HBO series The White Lotus (2021) or romantic comedy Everything except you (2023), the 27-year-old actress has multiplied projects in Hollywood. This growing celebrity is often accompanied by criticism, including from influential women in the cinema industry.
This is the case of Carol Baum, producer of numerous films (The Good Girl, The Wild Flight, The Virtuoso), who had declared, as recalled Variety, that Sydney Sweeney was not “not pretty” And “that she didn’t know how to play.” In an interview given to Vanity Fairupon mentioning these comments made in public last January, the young actress deplored this behavior.
“It’s very discouraging to see women denigrating other women,” she declared about the producer’s comments before specifying: “ especially when successful women in other areas of their industry see young talents working very hard – hoping to achieve their dreams – only to try to denigrate and discredit all the work they have done.”
A lack of sisterhood in the industry
The young woman also took the opportunity to underline her disappointment with this lack of female solidarity in the Hollywood world. “In this whole industry, everyone says that women make other women stronger. None of this is true,” regrets Sydney Sweeney. “This is all false and serves as a cover for all the other bullshit they say behind everyone’s backs”she adds.
Trying to understand the reason for this attack, it comes from the idea “that there can only be one woman at the top”, too widespread according to her in the collective unconscious.
The actress began to make herself known in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019) by Quentin Tarantino. Main role in the series Euphoriastarring in the first season The White Lotus (2021) and biographical drama reality (2023), the actress appeared this year in Madam Web, in the thriller Immaculateand in the romantic comedy box office phenomenon Never without you in which she responds to Glen Powell. She will soon appear in films Echo Valley (Apple TV+) and Eden (Prime Video) where she will respectively opposite Julianne Moore and Jude Law.
