SV Wehen Wiesbaden slipped into the relegation place. The Hessians still have three games left to get over the line again. The key game for the SVWW is in Braunschweig.

No, there’s hardly anything going on at SV Wehen Wiesbaden at the moment. After a decent first half of the season with 22 points collected, the Hessians have slipped deeper and deeper into the relegation battle of the 2nd Bundesliga in recent weeks and months.

From the last 14 games, the promoted team only collected a measly ten points – fewer than any other team – and slipped to 16th place in the relegation zone. Last summer’s newcomer threatens to become the current relegated team.

A four-way battle to stay in the league

In order to avert disaster, the rip cord was pulled in Wiesbaden on Sunday. Just a few hours after the wild 3:5 against Greuther Fürth The second division team fired coach Markus Kauczinski. For the time being, the previous assistant coaches Nils Döring and Giuliano Modica will lead the team. It is not yet clear whether the duo should lead the SVWW through the remaining three games. One thing is certain, however: the mission of staying in the league will be difficult to accomplish.

Table - 2nd Bundesliga

With three game days to go, unless something absolutely spectacular happens, a four-way battle has developed in the bottom of the table. From the quartet of SVWW, Braunschweig, Kaiserslautern and Rostock, one club will be relegated directly and another will have to go into relegation. The key for Wiesbaden to not belong is Eintracht Braunschweig.

Direct duel in Braunschweig

Lower Saxony is in 14th place, two points ahead of SVWW. Eintracht still have to play against Fürth, against Wiesbaden and on the last match day against Kaiserslautern. The direct clash in particular could be a lifeline for the Hessians.

If Braunschweig loses in Fürth and the Wiesbaden team wins the direct duel with their relegation rivals the following week, SVWW will overtake Eintracht in the table. On the last match day, the Hessians would have everything in their own hands again. A defeat would almost be a knockout blow. The first leg went to Lower Saxony 3-1.

Celebrate with St. Pauli?

At least on paper, Braunschweig is by far the SVWW’s easiest remaining opponent. The remaining home games are tough: On Sunday (1:30 p.m.) the league runners-up from Kiel will appear, and league leaders St. Pauli will travel to the Hessian capital for the season finale.

The hope in Wiesbaden is that the Hanseatic people will have already secured their promotion and will no longer be fully focused on their work – and that we can celebrate together at the end of the day. Competitor Braunschweig may have to struggle a lot more with the relegation crash in Kaiserslautern.
