Supreme Court accepts the government’s appeal and orders that the trial of Los Gallegos be telematic

This afternoon, The Supreme Court accepted a protection appeal filed last night by the Ministry of the Interior, the Arica Regional Prosecutor’s Office and the Gendarmerie. The request sought to annul the determination of the Court of Appeals of Arica to carry out in person the oral trial against 19 defendants linked to Los Gallegos, a criminal organization linked to the Aragua Train.

The highest court finally overturned that decision and decreed that the trial be carried out electronically, considering the risks that the in-person transfer of the accused could entail. Something that various government authorities have warned about.

“Our opinion, which is the opinion of the Gendarmerie, is that holding the trial in person, having the possibility of real and effective telematic connection, poses a significant security risk for three main reasons. The first, for the transfers. The second, due to the profile of the people. They are dangerous and high commitment. And the third, due to the risk involved in an in-person trial of these characteristics in the place where the court is located,” the Minister of Justice explained this morning, Luis Cordero.

The judicial instance will take place next Monday in the Oral Criminal Court of Arica.
