CULTURE – A response which has the merit of being honest. The creator of the series Netflix hit Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, was questioned by the BBC on the reason which pushed him to be in charge of season 2 which is expected for the end of December 2024. It is about money.
“Even though the first season was a huge success overall, I honestly didn’t win much”admits Hwang Dong-hyuk in this article published this Monday, November 11. “Doing the second season will help make up for the success that season 1 had”he explains.
However, the Korean director does not stop only at financial considerations. He adds in fact that he agreed to take over the project because he did not “not quite finished the story”. And this despite the stress which caused him to lose nine teeth during the filming of the first season.
Series that has become a social phenomenon
The second season of Squid Game picks up three years after the end of the first. Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, is now rich but obsessed with destroying the organization behind the deadly game. Using his fortune to fund his research, Gi-hun begins by tracking down the man in the suit playing ddakji on the subway. But his quest for justice leads him to re-enter the terrifying game.
The first season of Squid Gamebroadcast in September 2021, quickly became a global phenomenon. With more than 1.65 billion hours watched in 28 days and reaching 111 million accounts, it became the most watched series in Netflix history.
