The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled this Friday in favor of the newspaper Le Monde and one of its journalists in the litigation for having linked Real Madrid and Barcelona with the doping network of Dr. Eufemiano Fuentesannounced the press service of the community court.
“The execution of a sentence that condemns a journalist and a press editor to payment of compensation for damages “must be denied to the extent that it violates freedom of the press,” the CJEU said in a statement.
The community court based in Luxembourg considered that the compensation of 390,000 euros in favor of Real Madrid and 33,000 euros in favor of a member of the medical team imposed by a Spanish court, and contested by the newspaper in French justice, is “disproportionate” and “involves the risk of deterring the press.”
