PT calls for impeachment against Norma Piña and ‘rebel’ ministers who oppose judicial reform – El Financiero

The bench of Labor Party (PT) in the Chamber of Deputies announced that it will request a impeachment trial for eight ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN)including its president, the Minister Norma Piñawho are accused of leading a “legal war” against the judicial reform.

This was reported by the coordinator of the PT parliamentary group in the Lower House, the Congressman Reginaldo Sandoval Florespointing out that this is a lawsuit against the ministers who are in “disrespect” and “rebellion”who “have attacked democratic institutions and violated constitutional supremacy.”

“There is no judge or magistrate who can stop this process and the progress of the Fourth Transformation, which is a profound revolution,” said deputy Sandoval Flores, who explained that the protections presented by some judges and ministers They do not have any type of validity, since the modifications to the Magna Carta went through a process that has already concluded.

Who are the Court ministers who would face impeachment?

In a press conference, the deputy Ricardo Mejía Berdeja announced the list of the eight ministers who are subjects of this request:

“We consider that they fall into the extremes that are expected for a political trial since they have not observed the principles of legality, loyalty, impartiality and efficiency. They have made an attack on the country’s institutions, on Mexican constitutionalism and on the federal representative republican form of government. “They violated the Political Constitution that they swore to comply with and enforce,” said the legislator.

Mejía Berdeja accused the ministers of violating constitutional supremacysince the Magna Carta establishes that there is no law or treaty above it, and that the changes made to it will only be the power of the supreme reforming Power, “it is the way in which the Constitution itself establishes the changes that must be enacted”, he stressed.


He added that since the approval of the reform of the Judiciary was “orchestrated measures” which ranged from suspensions of judges to prevent it from being discussed and even published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).

The key dates for the election of ministers, magistrates and judges in 2025

Deputy Reginaldo Sandoval explained that it will be October 31 when the three powers install their evaluation committees. Subsequently, on November 4, the call will be published to participate in the evaluation and selection process of applicants; From the 5th to the 24th of the same month will be the deadline to register to the calls issued by the evaluation committees.

Then, on December 14, the committees will verify that the candidates meet the constitutional eligibility requirements, and the next day, that is December 15, The list of people who have met the requirements will be published.

By January 31, 2025, the evaluation committees will rate the suitability of eligible individuals, and later, On February 4, the best evaluated profiles will be selected for each position. On the 6th of the same month, through a public session, adjustments will be made to the number of applications.

Finally, on February 9, the purified lists will be approved by the Powers of the Union and sent to the Senate of the Republic, which in turn will send them to the National Electoral Institute (INE) on February 12.
