Press Freedom Day: Vallejo says that “the postponement of the trial in the Francisca Sandoval case is not seen as a good sign”

Within the framework of the World Press Freedom Day conference, the government spokesperson minister, Camila Vallejoreferred this Friday to the case of Francisca Sandovala journalist who died during the 2022 Workers’ Day march. This, after the President Gabriel Boric was rebuked during his speech at the ceremony.

And in the middle of his speech, the President was interrupted by two people who displayed a banner demanding justice for the murder of the journalist from signal 3 in La Victoria.

Along with this, the director of the aforementioned medium, Benjamin Lillorebuked the President: “In a march in the heart of Santiago, where nine people shot (…) the Carabineros of Chile did not act, the Ministry of the Interior, which is part of the complaint, has not requested any diligence or investigation to find justice for our murdered journalist colleague and they are talking to us about freedom of expression and freedom of the press. It’s a joke, Mr. President.“, said.

For his part, Boric responded that it was not a joke. In addition to that, he extended an invitation: “Count on us, I say to you and the family, to be able to not only collaborate, but also speed up the investigation because I know that the trial was also postponed and that seems unacceptable to us on the part of the “Prosecution”.

Under that framework, and after the ceremony, Vallejo was consulted about this situation. “The case of Francisca Sandoval was a case that moved us and continues to move us for two years. Not only because she was a young journalist who worked in an independent media, such as Canal Signal 3 de la Victoria, but because it occurred in the context of International Workers’ Day, and journalists are workers too,” she said. .

“In addition, from that, we finished closing the bill proposal for the protection of communications workers precisely because we understand that higher standards are required from the State for the protection of this exercise,” he added. .

In that sense, he assured that “we understand the discomfort and frustration that the relatives themselves, not only the channel, but the relatives themselves have publicly expressed given the postponement of the trial of this case that was announced by the Prosecutor’s Office.”

“We completely respect the work of the Public Ministry and its autonomy, but we also understand at the same time the frustration and regret of this postponement, because in this context, where we commemorate World Press Freedom Day, it is not seen as a good signal,” accused the minister.

Vallejo continued to respond and stated that “we have accompanied this trial through the complaint that the Ministry of the Interior has presented. We are very attentive to its progress. Justice will have to determine that, but it is also important to note that after this brutal murder, those responsible were quickly identified and arrested.”

In closing, the Secretary of State said: “We hope it ends in a good way, and the President has already said it too, that they will be received by the Ministry of the Interior. Because we have already had several instances of work with more resources, but we understand that the request explicitly goes to the Ministry of the Interior and the President has already committed that entity.”
