Powdery scent, healing root: It’s time to plant the flower that even Marco Polo admired

White, soft pink, purple and red peony flowers have been a staple of rural, urban and Japanese gardens for centuries. The sweet and clean-smelling flower, which Marco Polo already said was “a rose as big as a head of cabbage” and the ancient Greeks knew how to treat it as a medicine, has been one of the most photographed flowers on social networks in recent years, where it usually highlights luxury and elegance. At the same time, the peony is by no means rare and unavailable: it thrives in ordinary gardens without much care. It is enough to know and follow a few rules on how to grow peonies.

Peony flowers are extremely beautiful and spread around them an unmistakable fascinating fragrance.

You can find it in garden centers and encyclopedias dozens of types of peonies: the most famous and most admired, which is decorated with large, heavy and full flowers, is the Chinese peony. It is a long-lasting perennial that needs good soil, lots of sun and wind to live. The time to plant peonies is right now: at the turn of April and May.

Peonies can last for decades in the same place

“It is advisable to think carefully about the place for planting peonies, because they will be there for 20 years or more. “Suitable soil is loamy, deeply loamy, slightly acidic and rich in nutrients,” the website says Gardening advice.

The depth of planting is also important for their successful and abundant flowering: five to eight centimeters below the ground is enough.

“If you plant the plant too deep, the peony will not produce nearly as many flowers as if it had been planted correctly. Expect that, even with proper planting, it will take a few years for the plant to grow into a bushy form and be decorated with flowers,” he explains iReceptář website. In the spring, it is enough to supply the plant with nutrients, for example, with a dressing made of wood ash or a complex fertilizer.

Depending on the type, peonies begin to bloom already at the beginning of May, and their beauty is not endless – they usually finish blooming at the beginning of the holidays. Their flowering depends on the amount of sunlight and watering: in the sun – the more the better, in watering a good measure: peonies are quite thirsty, but they do not like waterlogged soil.

Even with the best care, however, you have to wait for flowers. “Peonies grow relatively slowly, that’s why only a few flowers appear in the first year, the plant is in full bloom only from the third year,” says iReceptář, adding that the same waiting period applies even if you dig up, divide and transplant a large old plant.

Plant different types of peonies together

Due to their unique beauty, peonies are best suited in beds alone, without plant companions. However, due to the different flowering dates of different types of peonies, gardeners recommend combining their varieties with each other: thanks to this, your peony bed can bloom from the beginning of May until the end of the holidays. If you still want to give them company and structure to the beds, bet on the complementary charm of irises, lupins, ornamental garlic or roses.

Long-smelling full-bloom peonies are an extremely popular flower for wedding bouquets: according to flower lore, it is the flower of old loves, constant trust and understanding, it also symbolizes romance, prosperity, happiness, happy marriage, wealth, honor and compassion. Even perfumers like to reach for its clean, elegant and slightly sweet powdery scent: the essence of peony petals is also included in one of the most famous fragrances of the 20th century – Miss Dior from Dior, you can currently smell it in perfumes from Chloé or Calvin Klein.

The essence of peony leaves is not only the source of an unforgettable and unmistakable fragrance: the ancient Greeks already believed in its healing power, and it has also been used in traditional Chinese medicine for millennia. People attributed the ability to help with epilepsy or snake bites to the petals, roots and seeds.

“It is also useful for hypertension, chest pain, muscle spasms and fever. An extract from the root was also a common remedy for irregular menstruation,” he writes Peace Health website with the fact that the use of peony essences, whether from the leaves or the root, is downright dangerous for pregnant women – they could cause a miscarriage.
