A man who allegedly performed a Nazi salute during a soccer match in Sydney has been charged by police.

On Tuesday, NSW Police released a statement that a 36-year-old man is alleged to have made the gesture during a match at Moore Park in April.

“In April 2024, detectives attached to Surry Hills Police Area Command commenced an investigation after reports that a man had allegedly performed a Nazi salute towards the group of people at a football game in a Moore Park stadium,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Following extensive investigations, Surry Hills detectives arrested a 36-year-old man at Surry Hills Police Station on Monday 14 October 2024.

“He was charged with make a gesture in a public place that is a Nazi salute.”

NSW Police confirmed with ABC Sport the date was April 13.

Sydney FC and Wanderers played at the Sydney Football Stadium in Moore Park on April 13 this year.

Football Australia announced after that match they were investigating a spectator who appeared to perform a Nazi salute during the A-League Men’s derby clash between Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC.

The man, standing in the Wanderers’ active supporter bay at Allianz Stadium, was filmed by Network Ten cameras at full-time in Saturday’s match, which was won 2-1 by Sydney FC.

Initially, the man gave the middle finger toward the camera before quickly turning into an apparent salute.

New laws brought in during 2022 makes the gesture illegal in NSW with a maximum jail term of 12 months.
