Philip Rivers reportedly wanted to play for Dolphins last season – The Denver Post

Former NFL star quarterback Philip Rivers reportedly contacted the Miami Dolphins late last season about coming out of retirement for a playoff run when the team was down to their third-string quarterback.

During Monday’s episode of The Rich Eisen Show, who compiled a top-five list of rumors he heard from multiple sources at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, Rivers contacted two NFL teams near the end of last season — the Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers.

“We all know two teams that were quarterback-needy at the end of the season, starting third-stringers and had a chance to go to the playoffs and maybe make a deep run in the playoffs, referring to the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers,” said Eisen. “I heard at the Combine that Philip Rivers contacted both of them to come back late last year.”

Neither team took Rivers up on the offer.

The Dolphins stuck with rookie quarterback Skylar Thompson, a seventh-round draft pick out of Kansas State, down the stretch after Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater were sidelined with injuries.

The 49ers decided to go with rookie Brock Purdy, known as “Mr. Irrelevant” for being the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft, after injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Rivers, 41, may still be seeking a comeback as free agency is set to begin next week.

Rivers retired on Jan. 20, 2021, after 17 seasons in the NFL. He spent 16 years with the Chargers before spending his final season with the Colts in 2020.

Rivers, an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, is one of the NFL’s all-time winningest quarterbacks with 134 victories. He also ranks near the top in completions (5,277), yards passing (63,440) and touchdown passes (421).
