The mother of a young man killed in a crash in Carlisle on Saturday which also claimed the lives of two of his friends has urged drivers to “do the right thing” as the state reels from a horror weekend on Perth’s roads.
George Te Kani, 22, was one of three young men who died after the vehicle they were passengers in veered off Orrong Road about 5am on Saturday and crashed into a tree and house.
Jayden Rukuata-Wood, 22, and father-of-four Blaine Clinch, 34, also died in the crash, while another two young men are fighting for their lives in hospital.
The alleged driver, Zac Heylen, 22, is accused of speeding up to 114km/h before the crash. He was denied bail when he appeared in court on Sunday.
Speaking to media on Monday afternoon, Te Kani’s mother Rexina Hira said her son was a “bright, cheeky … normal teenage boy – he just wanted to do well in life”.
But she urged all drivers – not just young drivers – to “do the right thing, even when no one is watching”.
“Life is about living and enjoying what we do, hopefully our young ones are out there listening and taking this very seriously,” she said.
“We don’t want to see this any more.
“My son was loving, light-hearted, caring, and it’s very sad that he’s no longer with us physically, but I know now he’ll be looking upon each and every one of us, smiling and looking after us too.”
