The Patriots will play a 2023 regular-season game in Germany, the NFL announced Thursday.
The Pats will kick off in Munich or Frankfurt at a date and time to be determined. It’s expected the game will serve as one of the Patriots’ nine home games. The Chiefs were also selected to play in Germany, where the NFL will host two games next season, indicating Kansas City will also be a designated home team.
“We are thrilled to be selected to play in Germany this year,” Patriots chairman and CEO Robert Kraft said in a statement. “We are undefeated in our three previous international games, thanks in part to the outstanding support from our fans. We know that some of our most passionate fans reside in Germany, and we look forward to finally playing a game there. We know the fans will create an amazing atmosphere.
“We are sure it will be a memorable experience and one of the highlights of the 2023 season.”
In 2021, the NFL awarded international marketing rights across various countries to 18 franchises. The Patriots, Chiefs, Panthers and Buccaneers were granted marketing rights in Germany for a five-year term starting Jan. 1, 2022. In November, the Bucs hosted the NFL’s first game in Germany and edged the Seahawks for a 21-16 win at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
“That was one of the great football experiences I’ve ever had,” said Buccaneers captain and former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. “(It) says a lot for 23 years in the league. For a regular-season game, I think the fan turnout was incredible.”
Excluding the Chiefs, the Patriots’ 2023 home opponents are the Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Chargers, Steelers, Eagles, Commanders and Saints. Buffalo is one of three teams scheduled to play in London next season, making it unlikely the Patriots will host the AFC East champs in Germany for what would be the Bills’ second international game in one season. All five teams designated for an international game next season (Patriots, Chiefs, Bills, Titans and Jaguars) are AFC teams.
The Patriots last played an international game in Nov. 2017. They beat the Raiders 33-8 in Mexico City.
