Rheingau Literature Prize for novel about dark GDR chapter
The Rheingau Literature Prize 2024 goes to Matthias Jügler for his novel “Mayflies Time”. It's about a young couple in the late phase of the GDR whose baby dies in the hospital. However, the parents still have doubts as to whether the hospital faked the death. According to the jury, Jügler tells the father's search for the truth with "literary precision" in less than 150 pages. The Hessian Culture Minister Timon Gremmels (SPD) said that Jügler's novel opens "a dark chapter in GDR history. It is important not to close our eyes to it....
