From the point of view of the Czech Extraliga, this will be the seventh and eighth open-air matches in history, but the last three took place outside Czech territory. The last time this year in February, Karlovy Vary and Pilsen took part in the West Bohemian derby at the ski jump in Klingenthal, Germany. In the Czech Republic, Brno and Sparta last played “away” in January 2016 at the football stadium behind Lužánky.

The WHG were originally supposed to take place already in 2020 in Špindlerův Mlýn under the ski slope in Svaté Peter. The event, which was supposed to feature the then first-league team Kladno with playing owner Jaromír Jágr against Vrchlabí and extra-league teams Hradec Králové with Sparta, was postponed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic and government measures. A partial replacement was then the exhibition Battle of Legends in the O2 arena, which commemorated the Czech triumph at the Olympics in Nagano.

“The open-air matches are a pleasant addition to the extra league and we are glad that the clubs have a positive attitude towards their organization. We have been discussing the event for several months, also because the project involves three countries, the coordination is not entirely easy,” said the director of the extra league, Martin Loukota . The participation of the German teams has not yet been officially confirmed, but nothing should jeopardize it.

The organizing agency Eniva is planning to build a spectacular area for the event at Letná with a capacity of 16,800 spectators, which will also include an ice rink for the public.
