Openbank launches a savings account that pays 5.25%

OpenbankSantander’s digital bank, has enabled its website in the United States as a prior step to its official launch and offers a savings account that remunerates 5.25% annually.

The bank warns on its website that the operation Not yet available to the general public in the United States and the official launch will occur later. The president of Banco Santander, Ana Botín, has recently said that it would be this month.

However, an account called ‘Openbank High Yield Savings’ which pays 5.25%, “above the national average interest for standard savings accounts.” It clarifies that this percentage “may vary” by geographic areas and is “subject to change without notice.”

Requires depositing at least $500, has no commissions and does not have a Santander account in the United States, so in the first phase it will not be possible to contract in the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island in which Santander Bank currently operates. However, the digital bank plans to expand its offer to these states in a second phase, overlapping with Santander, as is the case in Spain, for example.

Santander’s plans for its online bank go through start this month in the United States and do it a little later, before the end of the year, in Mexico, joining the four countries in which it currently operates -Spain, Germany, Portugal and the Netherlands-.
