
One of the best tight ends in New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers history has died.
Russ Francis, a three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, died at 70 on Sunday. He was involved in a fatal plane crash in upstate New York.
“We are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of former New England Patriots tight end Russ Francis. Our condolences are extended to Francis’ family and friends,” the Patriots announced.

NFL fans are deeply saddened by his passing.
“Russ was a hell of a football player, winning a Super Bowl with SF, and was a multi-time Pro Bowler in NE. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones,” one fan wrote.
“First Tim Wakefield now this. Just tragic. R.I.P. Russ Francis. New England Patriots. You will be dearly missed,” one fan added.

Francis, who played collegiately at Oregon, played in the NFL from 1975-89.Â
