September was a cold month in much of Spain with temperatures maximums that came to be 2.5 degrees below normal values for the time in some areas, according to eltiempo.es. Last month, 150 new thermal records were recorded, most of them cold and, above all, in the second fortnight.
The month was cold in large areas of the north. The average temperature anomaly reached -1.5 degrees Celsius in Huesca and -1.4 in Burgos, station that has data since 1943. The rest of the west, center and northeast of the country also recorded negative anomalies, softening towards the south and east.
The exception to these negative anomalies occurred in areas of the east and south, especially in the southeast. Málaga presented the greatest positive anomaly, with an average temperature 1.6 degrees higher than the 1991-2020 average. In the Canary Islands, the month was generally between normal and slightly cool.
The anomalies were greater in the maximums. For example, in Burgos-Aeropuerto the maximum anomaly was -2.7 degrees, while The largest negative anomaly was recorded in Pamplona, with -3 degrees in maximum temperatures. At the national level, the average temperature presented a negative anomaly compared to the 1991-2020 average.
In September 2024, more than 150 new temperature records. Most of these, for the first time in a long time, were due to cold. “Although many of these stations are relatively recent (10 to 20 years), the fact that very old stations have broken records reinforces the uniqueness of the month,” considers eltiempo.es.
One of the most notable cold data is that of the monthly minimum in Salamanca- Airport. This station, which is quite old, had a September minimum of 0.4 degrees, recorded on September 30, 1974. On September 28, 2024, the station recorded a new minimum of 0.3 degrees.
A very uneven month in terms of rain
Regarding the rains, September did not present a clear pattern. The country as a whole showed a positive anomaly, but by season, this reality is not reflected uniformly.
In much of the country, the month presented negative anomalies in terms of precipitation. The positive anomalies were more limited, but in some cases quite significant.
This is because the rains came mainly from storms and showers, which resulted in a irregular and random distribution. For this reason, some areas experienced a humid or very humid month, such as in Logroño, where 90.7 millimeters (mm) were recorded compared to an average of 30.6 mm.
