Lost base of support? The fall of Boric in Cadem alerts La Moneda

The warning had already been given on Friday the chief of advisors of La Moneda, Miguel Crispi, at a lunch with the presidents of the ruling parties. “Security is going to take over the agenda,” said the sociologist, who also announced the steps to be followed by the government in the preview of the public account on June 1. The directives agreed on the diagnosis.

For this reason, when President Gabriel Boric scored 24% approval this Sunday afternoon, his lowest figure since he took office on March 11, 2022, the President’s teams asked to maintain calm, despite the fact that the Palace’s internal numbers do not show the same downward trend.

The figure crystallized for the first time a drop in what is known as the “support base” of the Head of State, that is, the 30% approval floor that the President has maintained since he assumed the Presidency. For this reason, beyond asking to remain calm, La Moneda did reflect on the numbers.

Part of the actions that the government has taken to counteract the decline in opinion polls, knowing that a trend along those lines was coming, is the suspension of activities and focusing on the security agenda.

This Monday, for example, The President was going to participate in the ceremony for the start of operations of the tunnel boring machine of the future Line 7 of the Santiago Metrobut finally canceled his presence to focus “on public account meetings,” according to his Communications team.

The internal analysis of the La Moneda teams – which was addressed in the political committee and among advisors from Secom and the Second Floor – was that last week was marked by bad news: the attack on three police officers in Cañete and the fatal Army training march in Putrewhich ended with the death of a conscript, they took “the agenda” in the balances they share in the government.

Furthermore, and to a lesser extent, there are those who suggested that the loss of support in that 30%, which already seemed solid, It could have been related to the statement he made last Tuesday about the “killapacos dog.” -one of the symbols of the social outbreak of 2019- by saying that it was a “crude and offensive” figure.

But internal figures still do not show a break between Boric and his support base, and the main reflection that ministers shared was that when there are crimes like Cañete’s, it is logical that citizen perception changes. And that all efforts have to be put into the public account, which is linked to an improvement in people’s evaluation.

Along these lines, this Monday the spokesperson was in charge of the Minister of Labor, Jeannette Jara, because Camila Vallejo, who heads Segegob, had health problems.

“Surveys are, effectively, photographs of the moment. Our duty and effort is put into improving management,” said Jara. And he added: “We look at them, by the way, and pay attention to the points that citizens are highlighting, which seem important to us., but they are not the lines of our actions nor do they compromise our daily actions (…). Our effort is focused on carrying out the tasks that the President has asked us to do, but not on making analyzes or hypotheses of certain surveys.”

The issue also generates concern in the ruling parties. Before the expanded political committee began this Monday, The President’s numbers were a topic of conversation. No one agreed that the statement about “the matapacos dog” had anything to do with it.

The senator and president of the PS, Paulina Vodanovic, stated that “the murder of the three police officers clearly must hit the government, in a situation that is dramatic and that moves us all. The efforts that are being concentrated today on the legislative agenda, with the push of the government, I believe will soon be valued in the polls.”

Along the same lines, the helmsman of the Liberal Party, Juan Carlos UrzúaHe added: “In every public position of exposure it happens that costs are paid for the events that occur and that have no direct impact on what the figure does or does not do. The President is in the middle of a week with many controversial events. I don’t think the issue of the ‘killing dog’ will be reflected.”

On the other hand, Marco Velarde, from Commons, He asked to listen to the surveys and be self-critical: “We must humbly recognize these numbers, because they hit us all. “You have to listen to people’s priorities that clearly have to do with security and not act crazy.”
