Liam Payne’s last big project revealed: One Direction star wrapped filming for new Netflix show just weeks before his death – as fans beg streaming service not to scrap it

Liam Payne wrapped filming for a new Netflix show just two months before his tragic death in Argentina.

The singer was spotted filming new show Building The Band for the first time in August, alongside Pussycat DollsNicole Scherzinger, Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland and AJ McLean from Backstreet Boys.

Netflix have still yet to confirm the show’s future following the tragedy, after reports that filming wrapped with three live shows shot in front of an audience at Aviva Studios in Manchester on late August.

The Netflix show finds talented singers from across the nation and places them in groups based solely on musical compatibility, connection, and merit.

The contestants have complete control every step of the way but the judges – Liam Nicole and Kelly – are eager to see how well each singer performs under the pressure of lights, cameras, choreographs and audiences.

Netflix previously said that viewers can expect ‘plenty of drama, next-level artistry, and unforgettable performances’.

Executive producer Cat Lawson said earlier this year: ‘Building The Band is a brave and bold undertaking for all involved as we hand over power to the singers themselves to form their own band based on chemistry first.

‘With looks out of the equation, can they create a deeper connection with their bandmates?’

‘With limited bands, there are difficult decisions and heart-stopping moments along the way, but ultimately the outcome is truly amazing, with bands forming who in my opinion are worthy of the very biggest stage!’.

Taking to X, grief-stricken fans have desperately been trying to learn Building The Band’s fate and said they were worried the streaming service might keep Liam’s final onscreen appearance ‘from them’.

Writing: ‘And what about Building The Band? Is Netflix now going to keep it from us? Liam was still a celebrity who worked on things in the public eye, he was important, no matter what his ex label thought about his potential, I can’t believe there’s music well never get to hear’.

‘Liam only recently filmed that Netflix singing competition Building The Band, did the show finish filming? Will they even show it on Netflix now?’: ‘It’s time to celebrate Liam Payne’s legacy instead of dwelling on grief. Liam Payne filmed the Netflix series “Building the Band” as a judge and mentor before his tragic death at 31. The show was greenlit in May, and filming wrapped in August’.

He was reportedly in negotiations for a series of live dates next year but friends were concerned he would not be able to handle time on the road.

A source told The Mirror: ‘When it emerged that Liam had been talking to new people about a series of dates, there was a great deal of unease among his friends that this was a bad idea.

‘Liam had split from his management about six months ago, and it would not have been something they would have recommended at the current time.’

‘Being on the road can be incredibly demanding and Liam wasn’t in the best place mentally.’

In August 2023 Liam’s followers shared their concern after he cancelled his tour of South America after being hospitalised with a kidney infection.

More than 65,000 people have signed a petition calling for new legislation, known as ‘Liam’s Law,’ to protect the mental health of artists in the music industry following Liam’s death .

The former One Direction star fell from the third floor of a hotel in the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires last Wednesday evening before medics confirmed his death.

The proposed law would mandate regular mental health check-ups, sufficient rest periods and the availability of mental health professionals on set, as well as ongoing support throughout an artist’s career.

The petition, launched anonymously on October 18 by a fan named Day KV on Change.org, states: ‘The entertainment industry must be held accountable and take responsibility for the well-being of its artists.

‘Resultant issues such as stress, anxiety, depression , substance misuse and even suicide are alarmingly high.

‘According to research, performers are 2-3 times more likely to suffer from these issues compared to the general population.’

‘Such a law would necessitate regular mental health check-ups, adequate rest periods, and the presence of mental health professionals on-set, including any ongoing support during their career.

‘It will ensure a healthier, safer, and more conducive working environment for artists to cultivate their talents reducing psychological distress.

‘This would also include early interventions to protect and minimise before it’s too late. It adds: ‘Your signature could be a lifeline for these talented individuals, contributing to a larger movement of mental health awareness and care in industries worldwide. Please, sign the petition.’
