In the nineties, there was no television program child that did not have Leticia Sabater in its ranks. Who from that generation has forgotten phrases like “at noon, joy” or “Ok, McKey”? It is curious that one of the faces best known to children of the nineties, has lived such traumatic experiences in his childhood and youth. Thirty years after her reign in children’s time, Leticia Sabater continues fighting to be what she aspired to be, as she has said, since she was eight years old: famous. Recently, Sonsoles Ónega invited Leticia Sabater to her program and asked her to remember a very painful chapter, “the disappearance of Bobby who, at one point, was the love of your life.” Sonsoles was referring to Roberto Corbo, a well-known businessman, in the Madrid night, during the first decade of the 21st century. Corbo was dedicated to lending large amounts of money, so he ran significant risks. The last time he was seen alive was in the early hours of February 11, 2009. Afterwards, it seemed as if a black hole had swallowed him and nothing was ever heard of him again.
“This has been one of the two most painful moments of my life,” Leticia confessed, but not before ensuring that talking about this topic was not the objective of the interview. One was the death of my mother from cancer; the other, Bobby’s disappearance. “It was a person I had been with for five years.”
When Roberto disappeared, at least five years had passed since the end of their romantic relationship. However, Leticia Sabater always considered him the great love of her life and, despite the breakup, both had managed to maintain a close friendship. The hardest thing for her is ignoring the truth about Bobby’s fate: “It’s horrible, because it’s not like a person has died. “It’s just that it has disappeared.”
In fact, throughout these fifteen years, a series of hypotheses have arisen about the end of Cobos: from the theory that the lender was murdered with two shots, and buried in a field near Coslada (Madrid) to the one who defends that he is still alive. There are those who say they have seen it in countries as distant as Brazil, Santo Domingo or Portugal, more specifically in the Algarve area. Fifteen years later, the mystery remains unsolved. What exactly happened that night? Who or who were the alleged enemies of the businessman, famous in all the capital’s soirées? What could be the motive that justifies his disappearance? According to some data – such as the debt he had acquired with the presenter, of eighty-nine thousand euros –, Roberto Cobos was not going through a good economic time, and had to respond to more debts, but is this reason enough to this resounding silence that hides either a perfect crime or a perfect voluntary disappearance?
In 2014, five years after the night of the incident, an alleged call from an inmate in a Valladolid prison to the police caused, according to El Mundo at the time, the case to be reopened. According to this new witness, Roberto Cobos had been murdered and his inert body had been transported in a Renault Kangoo to a vacant lot. However, this line of research was soon discarded.
Now, in 2024, a friend of Roberto Cobos, José Luis Gómez, has revealed in Ónega’s program details of the last night he saw his friend, precisely that fateful February 11. Apparently, they were celebrating a birthday in a bar. José Luis saw Roberto leaning on the bar next to “a man in a gray suit, about fifty years old.” Shortly after, he returned to the bar and there was no trace of either the unknown man or his friend. The doormen of the establishment confirmed that Bobby, as his friends called him, had left in a car with that man whom no one knew how to account for.
Three decades have passed, and both José Luis Gómez and Cobos’ relatives still hope that he is still alive, because over the years several people have claimed to have seen him.
The dark year of Leticia Sabater
Leticia Sabater’s “heart breaks” every time she remembers the past. She still doesn’t know if her ex-boyfriend and friend is dead or alive. It has not been an easy year for this presenter who, in the 21st century, reinvented herself and made an album aimed at an adult audience, a 180 degree turn for someone who began her career for the little ones. But, to be fair, Leticia Sabater has never had it easy. Since she was a child she suffered countless operations to correct her strabismus. This made him cannon fodder for bullying. He heard all kinds of insults, but what hurt him the most was the lack of communication with Jorge Sabater de Sabatés, his father, who just died at the age of ninety. “He has passed away and I feel sorry for him,” he explained in front of Sonsoles Ónega, “but, of course, My father has always been a real nightmare for me. Throughout my life, he has humiliated me so much that I have never been able to love him.” Some statements that surprised everyone, like when he revealed: “I have a lot of pending conversations. I will be able to help many children who have suffered what I have and whose parents are worried because their child will not succeed. “I have had a very difficult and complicated childhood, and part of the blame has been on my father.”
At least, he has overcome all those disappointments. Not long ago, in The Anthill, Leticia Sabater He tried to add some notes of humor to those hard experiences he had in his childhood: “They called me ‘joke face’. “I was born cross-eyed, I always had an eye patch, with crooked knees…” However, he did not let himself sink. He turned weakness into strength and learned two lessons. The first was that “I had to be nice so that someone would pay attention to me in this life, because no one paid attention to me.” And the second thing, that despite the insults he was receiving, he had to go out into the street “as if he were Claudia Schiffer, the hottie from Spain.” This resilience in the face of adversity makes the years, the decades, pass and Leticia Sabater continues to maintain a loyal audience that appreciates her sense of humor.
