LAWRENCE — As the season rolls along, Lawrence’s defense continues to shine.
Danny Reyes scored 17 points while the Lancers defense was stalwart as Lawrence came through with a massive Merrimack Valley Conference road win by defeating Central Catholic, 56-49, on Friday night.
The win improves Lawrence to 12-1 and keeps them atop the power rankings in Division 1.
“Our guys take a lot of pride in their defensive effort,” Lawrence coach Jesus Moore said. “Everyone of them out there show a lot of pride, and Danny Reyes continues to show what a senior leader is all about.”
Lawrence held a 24-18 lead at the break but stretched it to 33-21 early in the third quarter on a triple by Reyes.
Central Catholic answered as John Kelley (17 points) hit three triples while Markys Bridgewater went coast to coast as part of a 15-5 run to trim the deficit to 38-36.
As the temperature in the gym ramped up so too did the Lawrence defense. Over the course of the first six minutes of the fourth quarter, the Lancers held Central Catholic without a field goal. At the other end, meanwhile, Reyes drilled a three pointer and Marius Canery hit a key bucket as part of a 11-2 spurt that bumped the lead to 49-40.
Joey Hart hit a three to pull the Raiders within seven, 52-45, with 1:15 left but Lawrence hit two at the stripe to finish off the win.
In the first half, Lawrence and Central were deadlocked at 15-15. The Lancers, however, went on a 9-0 run to close the second quarter highlighted by a nifty finish from Canery to go in front 24-18 at the break.
