It will invest 3 billion pesos in renovations for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico – El Financiero

Mexico City International Airport (AICM) will invest at least 3 billion pesos for the remodeling of the image of the two terminals and for major maintenance works heading towards the first half of 2026, in the run-up to the Soccer World Cup that will be held in Mexico, the United States and Canada.

He AICM confirmed to The Financier that the 3 billion pesos will serve to give life to the architectural design projects that will be presented at the image renewal contest convened by the Secretary of the Navy, the agency that commands the most important air port in the country.

The AICM image renewal includes spaces in both terminals, mainly waiting areas, migrationamong other elements of the airport.

The amount available to invest represents double the resources received through the budget this year.

It should be noted that the AICM must transfer the resources collected through the TUA, about 12 billion pesos annually, to the payment of interest on the bonds of the canceled airport project in Texcoco (NAIM), therefore It only has the resources labeled each year in the Expenditure Budget and an amount that originates from commercial services within the air port.

The AICM told this newspaper that the major maintenance and architectural renovation works would be ready for the first half of 2026.

The conditions of the AICM during the last decade worsened given that the government of Enrique Peña Nieto planned to permanently close the airport since the Texcoco airport was projected to begin operating in 2024 and, given this, They stopped investing in the maintenance of the ‘Benito Juárez’ for at least four years.

With the cancellation of the project in Texcoco, the AICM had to face its deteriorated situation, which reached its greatest point of degradation at a structural level and on duty during the six-year term of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Although the AICM is an organization that generates its own resources, which would be enough to invest in its maintenance, more than 90 percent of your income They are deposited every quarter to a Trust that is responsible for paying the interest on bonds issued internationally.

The current debt It is more than 3.7 billion dollarsof which the AICM pays quarterly interest. Derived from this situation, the AICM only has budget resources, which represent only 10 percent of what it generates from TUA to be able to meet its operating costs and the maintenance of its facilities.

The Azteca Stadium, located in Mexico City, will be one of the three venues in the country for the FIFA World Cup in 2026. In addition, it is expected that it will be where the inaugural match of the Mexican soccer teamas well as other group stage matches.
