Israel reopens Kerem Shalom crossing after several days of closure following Hamas attack

The Israeli authorities announced this Wednesday the reopening of the Kerem Shalom crossing, on the border with the Gaza Strip, after its closure following a projectile attack carried out on Sunday by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) that left four soldiers dead.

The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), the Israeli military authority in charge of coordinating its activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, has indicated that The crossing was opened early in the day “for the entry of trucks with humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.”

“Following the closure of the Kerem Shalom crossing due to rocket fire by Hamas, the crossing is now open for the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip,” the organization stressed through its website. social

Thus, he has stated that “lThe trucks with aid are already arriving at the crossing” and added that “after an intense security inspection, they will be transferred to the Gazan side,” before emphasizing that the Erez crossing “continues to operate to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid to Gaza after security checkpoints in Israel, as it did while Kerem Shalom was closed due to Hamas attacks.”

The reopening of the crossing takes place a day after the Army launched an incursion into the city of Rafah, located in the south of the Strip and on the border with Egypt, which allowed the military to take control of the Palestinian side of the border crossing. , suspending operations in the area, including the entry of humanitarian aid to the enclave.

Various United Nations agencies described the taking of the pass as “a devastating blow” for humanitarian operations. The spokesman for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Jens Laerke, said that there is only “one day’s worth of fuel” for operations in the entire enclave and maintained that “if no fuel comes in for a prolonged period of time it is a very effective way to bury humanitarian operations.”

The operation at the Rafah crossing was launched hours after the war cabinet created in Israel after the October 7 attacks by Hamas agreed “unanimously” to go ahead with the potential offensive on Rafah after the Palestinian Islamist group claimed that it had accepted a ceasefire proposal presented by Qatar and Egypt, arguing that the Hamas-backed text “is far” from Israeli demands.
