In the footsteps of the heralds. The pilgrim from Vyškovsko walked home from Istanbul in 41 days

Jiří Novotný from Vyškovsko has completed an expedition of over sixteen hundred kilometers. In forty-one days, he decided to walk the same route that the Slavic prophets Cyril and Methodius traveled centuries ago. And the modern pilgrim managed it.

The well-worn sneakers were not nearly enough to cool down, the pilgrim returned home only a few days ago. “The reason for the trip was the desire to try something similar, but at first I didn’t know exactly what it would be,” describes Jiří Novotný.

It wasn’t until a few years ago that he began researching the route they had taken hundreds of years ago Saints Cyril and Methodius. “Suddenly it got ripe, I have to check it out personally and try what they might have been experiencing. Such an experiment,” says the pilgrim.

Same route, same time and if possible same conditions. “In addition to paying tribute to the Annunciation, I added another benefit to it, namely a collection for the repair of the Cyril and Methodius monuments. It works permanently through the Morava 1918 foundation,” the man points out.

The pilgrim from the village in the Vyškov region had a truly diverse spectacle.

He was overcoming pain

To walk 1,650 kilometers in forty-one days was, according to Novotný, on the edge and sometimes even beyond the edge. “My assumption was confirmed that both brothers were not only saints, but also sporty very persistent,” smiles the pilgrim.

He described overcoming the pain and knowing that there will be even more pain in the days to come as the most difficult. “The spirit would go, but the body just doesn’t last as much mechanically,” he shrugs traveler.

He can’t even talk about further trips at home with exaggeration. “First of all, he has to sit down with his experiences from this mission, I will write a travelogue or a cookbook for those interested in repeating this route in future years. See you then. I didn’t throw away the shoes, at least they can withstand a few hundred kilometers,” Jiří Novotný evaluates the walking pilgrimage.
