“I have done what anyone who is able and who has the availability should do.” In this way, Sea Flowers account to HELLO! how he mobilized last weekend to help the victims of DANA. Seeing the horror in an area where she has worked for five years, the model could not sit idly at home and, last Sunday, she went to the Espattio gallery that Blanca Barrera-Cuadra has on Madrid’s Monte Esquinza street. . There, some had organized volunteers to collect food and cleaning supplies, including Lola Indigo and other singers of Operación Triunfo.
-Mar, before you decide to go help, you would see many points. What encouraged you to approach this specific one and what did you find?
Due to proximity to my home. Also because the people who were organizing all this were people I knew and they asked for help. They sent a message saying they needed volunteers to pick up food and things. So, I made a purchase of all kinds of products: children’s supplies, baby food, blankets, sleeping bags, wellies, shovels… I took everything I could. Then I stayed there for a few hours.
-Did you know the rest of the volunteers?
The people who were there organizing were people who we already knew each other among us. There were also people who offered their trucks and their help through transport companies. In addition, a children’s association also contacted me, which had pallets of alcohol gel that had been donated to them for COVID and that they no longer needed. So, I organized some vans to pick up those four pallets and send them to Valencia. On Sunday, we sent 13 trucks to Valencia and doing it in an improvised way.
-What did you see was needed?
I went to help as another person, not to do anything important. What is important is that, by spreading it on my social networks, the work has been amplified and has helped connect transport companies with people who offered their own trucks. For example, children’s associations. But I have done what any person who feels solidarity with the Valencian people. I have contributed what I can contribute, which is to spread the word and connect people who want to help. The same organization was saying that it did not need more clothes, but, for example, more wellies. We were asking the contacts we have as we went along.
-Despite everything being quite spontaneous, there was a certain organization, more than probably than in Valencia.
Yes. Now Valencia is very emotionally affected. When someone is emotionally affected, they have no ability to react. But they have felt alone. I think a lot of psychological support will be needed. The people who they have lost their relativeswho have been left without homes… It is a human catastrophe caused by a storm and those affected have not felt helped or supported by the Government. So, this is serious. I think we should also send this type of help.
-I hope you haven’t had any close human losses.
I have been working on television in Valencia for five years, and the Valencian people have always welcomed me very well. I have many known friends affected by this at very different and very deep levels, with human losses. That’s why it moved me a lot. I just hope that this is also capable of get well soon and send all the help they need.
