“I didn’t want him to splash me, I was scared”

The last person arrested for the crime of Samuel Luiz, Alejandro Míguez, acknowledged this Thursday thatand lied when he testified in the case as a witness: “I didn’t want this to get on me”he argued and added that “I was scared.”

In his statement, he has only pointed out to others two accused, Diego Montaña and Alejandro Freire ‘Yumba’, as aggressors within the “tumult” that ended the life of the victim, in addition to the two minors already convicted.

The first section of the Provincial Court of A Coruña has hosted a new session of the trial against five adults in the case of the death of Samuel Luiz on July 3, 2021, in which The Prosecutor’s Office requests sentences of between 22 and 27 years in prison.

The accusation asks for 22 years in prison

The first of the defendants to testify – there are three who will do so in the last session in mid-November – was Alejandro Míguez, for whom the Prosecutor’s Office and the accusations They ask for 22 years in prison for murder with treachery and crueltywho has considered himself “innocent”, since he has stated that he is not “an aggressive person”, but rather believes “that with dialogue I understand that we can reach all places.”

He said that that day he had met Diego Montaña to go out at night and at the Andén pub met other acquaintancesin addition to other people involved in the case with whom he has said he had hardly any relationship.

He recalled that Montaña had “an altercation” and was expelled from the premises, along with one of the convicted minors and He went out with his then partner, the also accused Catherine Silva, who was trying to “calm” the first one.

He later left and He approached a point where he heard screamsafter Kaio Amaral Silva – another of the accused, whom he has said he also tried to separate -, and saw Diego Montaña “throwing a series of punches” towards a person he did not know and whom he Alejandro Freire grabbed him by the neckin addition to the two minors.

“First of all, I try to know what is happening (…) I hear Catherine tell me: ‘Don’t do anything, this is all Diego’s fault’ (…) I remember putting my arms in and trying to access Diego Montaña and then being displaced by the tumult. From there, according to him, he disassociates himself from the aggression because he does not know the reasons for its origin: “I try to separate at that moment and I see that it is impossible“he declared.

The witness contradicts himself

Asked about the contradiction between what was reported and what he had said as a witness in the summer of 2021 – since he was arrested on September 29 of that year – he acknowledged that he lied then: ““I didn’t want this to splash me,” he added and stated that “I was scared.”.

Míguez has not recognized himself in any image or video of that night, although he has added that he later saw some of the accused and other people both at the hospital, where They came for a friend’s alcohol poisoning and where they learned of the seriousness of the events, and in a park, where the Prosecutor’s Office believes that they met to agree on the versions of the events, a point that they have denied. There Alejandro Freire was “in shock, totally hysterical,” while He insisted: “I didn’t kill him,” he concluded.
