Hundreds of thousands of phishing messages sent: four men arrested in Frankfurt | hessenschau.de

They are said to have sent around 950,000 phishing messages to obtain credit card data: four suspects arrested in Frankfurt are said to be responsible for this. Another suspect is on the run.

The Frankfurt Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated proceedings against five accused due to particularly serious cases of data phishing via SMS.

Four of the suspects are in custody, a fifth is still on the run, as the police and the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Wednesday. The detainees, aged 19 to 27, were arrested in Frankfurt, a police spokesman said in response to a request from HR.

Alleged messages from the parcel service

They are accused of having prepared particularly serious cases of computer fraud as a gang. In addition, the allegations are of falsifying evidence-relevant data in particularly serious cases and of preparing computer fraud.

In total, they are said to have sent around 950,000 phishing SMS messages, which allegedly came from a parcel service or telecommunications company, among others. The phishing SMS asked people to visit a website that was modeled on the official websites of the respective companies.

26,000 credit card details obtained

In further steps, the recipient was asked to enter personal details and bank details. As a result, unauthorized payments of at least 43,000 euros were made.

According to the report, the suspects obtained a total of 26,000 credit card records in this way. These were handed over to the banks by the police.

Luxury items shopped in Frankfurt

The suspects, who have French citizenship, are said to have used the money to, among other things, enter Germany and purchase luxury items in Frankfurt.

At the request of the Public Prosecutor General’s Office, the Frankfurt District Court had already issued arrest warrants against two accused in November 2023 and against two further accused in December 2023 due to the risk of absconding. The investigation is ongoing.
