Housing Emergency Plan: Montes highlights 44% progress

This Thursday, the Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, Carlos Montesaddressed the progress of Housing Emergency Planwhose goal to deliver 260 thousand homes during the administration of President Gabriel Boric, within the framework of the plan in question. This, in a context in which the country faces what it describes as “a true housing crisis.”

“According to the latest data from Casen Housing, 552 thousand families urgently need housing. Families that are having a very bad time, in a situation of close quarters, overcrowding or in a camp, the latter probably the hardest face of this crisis whose overcoming must be a reason for national unity. No sector can be indifferent to this reality that challenges us as a society and to which we must all contribute,” he began, pointing out in a letter published in El Mercurio.

President Gabriel Boric at the launch of the Housing Emergency Plan.

The Secretary of State indicated that, until March of this year, Minvu has completed 114,607 homes, which is equivalent to 44.1% progress on the plan. Meanwhile, another 119,518 are under execution and 82,370 more are about to start, with approved projects and resources.

From the beginning we said that it was an extremely challenging goalwhich meant increasing the pace of housing production with State support, which had been decreasing in recent years and, furthermore, with headwinds, with a construction sector still very affected by the effects of the pandemic, with many companies on the brink of bankruptcy, a sharp rise in the cost of materials and high credit rates,” he explained.

Minister Montes maintained that since they arrived in La Moneda they implemented “A series of measures, worked with the unions, to support construction companies and ensure that many projects that were paralyzed and even abandoned could resume work.” Likewise, they promoted a legislative agenda on the matter and developed “strong management to strengthen the Public Land Bank, which has allowed us to gather the necessary hectares to complete the goals of the plan and, in addition, anticipate and leave land available for a faster execution of future projects.

However, he warned that the success of the plan depends on several factors, since overcoming the housing deficit “is a longer-term effort, which goes beyond what is possible to do in one or two administrations.”

“That is why we have also worked to leave installed capacities, implement structural policies so that, in a systematic way, the construction processes of social housing are accelerated. For example, we have introduced new and innovative lines to our housing policy, such as Self-construction and Industrialization Program, the Serviu Direct Execution System, Fair Price Rental or Housing for Workers”, he detailed.

Although their portfolio is “aware of the difficulties” and will continue working “tirelessly” to move forward with the plan, Montes called for understanding that achieving those goals “It also depends on how we all, from our respective fields, contribute to them.”

To achieve success, The satisfaction that 260 thousand families have access to something as fundamental for life as a home, will not only be from the Government, but from all Chileans, from all sectors, who remain committed to a fairer and more prosperous Chile.” , he stressed.
