Through a statement, the Foreign Ministry regretted that the United Nations Security Council rejected the resolution that would allow Palestine to join as a member state of the United Nations.
During the day this Thursday, the 15-member council voted on the project that recommended to the 193 members of the UN General Assembly that “the State of Palestine be admitted as a member of the United Nations.” In the instance, the project obtained 12 votes in favor, one against (from the United States) and two abstentions, so it was rejected due to the US veto.
The Palestinian push for full UN membership comes six months after a war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza that has killed more than 33,000 Palestinians, according to reports from the enclave’s health authorities, and while Israel is expanding the settlements in the West Bank.
Under this framework, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in which they expressed their dissatisfaction with the situation. “The Government of Chile deeply regrets that the United Nations Security Council has not approved, due to the existence of a single veto, the admission of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations,” the text reads.
“The Government of Chile joins what has been stated by a large part of the international community, in the sense that the recognition of a Palestinian State is a fundamental condition for achieving peace, in addition to contributing to stabilizing the delicate situation in the Middle East,” it is added.
“Finally, Chile reiterates the need to recognize the right of Israel and Palestine to coexist in peace, within secure borders, in accordance with the provisions of the resolutions adopted by the United Nations,” the document closes.
This position was reinforced by Foreign Minister Albero Van Klaveren, who after being approached by the press in La Moneda, declared that “yesterday the United Nations Security Council did not approve the recognition of Palestine as a Member State of the United Nations.” United. This is an aspiration that Palestine has held for many years, always supported by Chile and supported by the international community.”
“Unfortunately, there was a veto that prevented this from being a reality,” added the minister.
