Family from Linden discovers 10 meter deep hole in garden |

The Bleyer family in Linden, central Hesse, is deeply frightened. A deep crater opened up in her garden over the long weekend. It was pure luck that no one fell in. The cause of the hole could be in an old tunnel.

The Bleyer family from Linden (Gießen) actually wanted to celebrate their daughter’s birthday in their garden. But she makes a shocking discovery: where there was supposed to be green lawn, there was suddenly a huge hole last Thursday.

The guests were already arriving that day, as father Stefan Bleyer remembers. “When the first mother brought her children, she spoke to me and asked what the hole was.” He looked and got a “huge shock”. A small depression that the family knew in their garden had turned into a meter-deep hole.

Children were still playing in the garden in the morning

Strictly speaking, the crater is at least ten meters deep and two meters wide. Stefan Bleyer measured it. “It’s like a deep well where you can’t see the end,” he says. In any case, the garden party had to wait for now. Using ladders and beer benches, Bleyer and a neighbor initially covered the ominous hole and built an old electric fence around it.

The family’s little daughter has just turned four, the son is not yet two. On the morning of their birthday, the two children were romping around in the garden – an idea that now sends shivers down father Stefan Bleyer’s spine. “You get goosebumps when you think about what could have happened,” he says.

Hole could be ventilation shaft

Stefan Bleyer is currently only guessing how the hole could have arisen: it could be the ventilation shaft of the former tunnel in the mining forest, which, according to the plans, runs under the family’s garden and could now have collapsed.

The Bleyers knew there was a mine here. They also suspected that the circular hollow in the garden, which they had repeatedly filled with soil, could have something to do with this. “But no one would have expected that it would rush down ten meters from now on,” says Stefan Bleyer.

Are there more holes lurking in the garden?

Even if the hole is poorly secured, the family does not feel safe. Because she wonders whether there are other holes lurking in the garden.

There is evidence of this: the previous owners of the house commissioned a geological report in the 1980s, which mentioned a circular funnel near the terrace. “Is there perhaps just such a cavity underneath?” asks Stefan Bleyer.

Criticism of the regional council

Stefan Bleyer has informed the building authority and the Giessen regional council (RP), which is responsible for the old mining site. The authority wants to coordinate further action. A response to an HR inquiry about the hole in Lich should be given on Tuesday.

Bleyer would have wished that the RP had already taken better precautions. He assumed that such shafts from disused mines would be “filled up and covered.” “So that it no longer poses any danger.”
