Escaped in the Wetterau: Bull and cow make Central Hesse unsafe | hessenschau.de

A couple of animal lovers are still on the run in Ober-Mörlen: first a bull escaped, then he also took a companion from the pasture. The search for the escaped animals has been ongoing ever since.

He was actually just supposed to move from one stable to the other. But a bull from Ober-Mörlen (Wetterau) apparently didn’t feel like it at all on Tuesday. A few meters from the new home, the bull hopped out of the transport trailer and ran away.

In order to make him docile again, the affected farmers came up with an idea: They put out a few female cattle to attract the hot-blooded bull. The problem: Instead, he managed to wrap one of the animals around the hoof. The cow, apparently in love with the shock, simply escaped and ran after the bull – both animals have not yet been recaptured, as the police announced on Friday.

Police searched with drone

After escaping together, an intensive search for the animal lovers followed. The police searched using a drone, among other things, but has since stopped the coordinated search.

Farmers, on the other hand, are still on the heels of the cattle. Because the search is based on the motto “better alive than dead”, they have hired a shooter to kill the animals with a tranquilizer dart.

Last seen at the edge of the forest

At the moment it is unclear where the fugitive lovers are. “Bonnie and Clyde” were last seen on May 1st near the Winterstein forest area on the L275 between the Langenhain-Ziegenberg district and Ober-Mörlen.

It’s hard to miss the animals: a bull can weigh a ton or more and run up to 40 km/h. Bulls are generally considered shy, but they can be dangerous. There have been cases of farmers being killed by aggressive bulls.

Förster advises caution

The HessenForst district manager Benjamin Biggel, who is responsible for Ober-Mörlen, is hardly surprised that the animals are so difficult to find. “We have huge areas here,” he explained when asked by HR on Friday. The Winterstein state forest alone covers more than 760 hectares. “A bull and a cow can hide in there.”

Biggel advises walkers in the region not to underestimate the danger. “A cow that doesn’t have a calf is relatively happy with a certain distance – a bull or bull may see things differently.” Anyone who is out and about in the Winterstein forest area or the surrounding areas and spots the animals should therefore keep a sufficient distance and avoid the cattle.
