Energy independence: April 17th is a deadline – News

  • According to calculations by the Swiss Energy Foundation (SES), Switzerland’s domestic energy resources will last until April 17th.
  • After that, Switzerland lives on credit from abroad.
  • From Thursday, Switzerland will be dependent on the import of energy sources such as oil, gas and uranium.

According to the SES, more than 70 percent of energy sources in Switzerland are imported. On average, Switzerland transfers more than eleven billion francs abroad every year for imports, writes the environmental organization.

The data basis

The Swiss Energy Foundation SES writes about the data collection: “The day was calculated by linearly extrapolating the development of the share of domestic production of primary energy sources in the total energy sources consumed domestically from 2013 to 2022 to the year 2024.” The Swiss total energy statistics 2022 from the Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) served as the data basis.

According to the SES, the “Energy Independence Day” – analogous to the “Earth Overshoot Day” for all resources – indicates until when domestic energy sources will last if only these have been needed since the beginning of the year.

High dependence on foreign countries – with a slight downward trend

In terms of the energy independence rates for 2024 calculated by Eurostat, Switzerland was in the lower midfield at 29.5 percent, compared to the EU countries. Germany, for example, had a rate of 32.7 percent – the so-called “Energy Independence Day” in Germany is therefore dated April 29th.

Thanks to an increased focus on renewable and climate-friendly energy sources, Switzerland succeeded in increasing energy independence from around 20 to 27 percent between 2001 and 2022, writes the Energy Foundation.

But further steps are needed towards a renewable and climate-friendly energy supply. According to the environmental organization, these would “additionally strengthen Switzerland’s energy independence in the future.” “The expansion of domestic renewable electricity production and the simultaneous electrification of many applications reduce the dependence on energy imports,” write those responsible.

Calculations showed that with the necessary measures Switzerland could postpone the date of Energy Independence Day to the end of August in 2035.
