Embassy of Cape Verde in Portugal calls for calm and serenity after death of Cape Verdean by PSP

The Embassy of Cape Verde in Portugal appealed for calm and serenity following the death of Odair Moniz, a Cape Verdean citizen, victim of a shooting by a PSP agent in the Zambujal Zone, Amadora.

In the statement released today on Facebook, the Embassy addressed its condolences to the family and friends and highlighted the need to calmly await the results of the investigations already underway, believing that they will be conducted with rigor and objectivity.

The Diplomatic Mission reaffirmed its confidence in the justice system and promised to closely monitor the progress of the process, providing support to the family if necessary.

However, he appealed for calm and serenity.

“Despite the natural consternation and shock that violent death causes, we call for calm and serenity, as the solution can only be found in an environment where the judicious application of the law and social peace prevail. Firmness in demanding what we think is fair is not incompatible with an environment of calm and serenity for investigating the facts and any resulting responsibilities”, it reads.

According to the Public Security Police of Portugal (PSP), a 43-year-old man “on the run” died on Monday after being shot by police in Cova da Moura, when he tried to resist arrest and attack officers with a sharp weapon.

Minutes before, on Avenida da República, in Amadora, the suspect, upon seeing a police vehicle, fled into Bairro Alto da Cova da Moura,” the security force said in a statement.

The man ended up dying at Hospital São Francisco Xavier, in Lisbon, where he was transported, and the PSP announced the opening of an internal investigation to investigate the circumstances of the incident.

The SOS Racismo association and the Vida Justa movement have already contested the police version of Odair Moniz’s death and demand a “serious and impartial” investigation to determine “all responsibilities”, considering that “a culture of impunity” in the police is at stake. .

Meanwhile, the PSP maintains reinforcements in Amadora after a night of disrespect and revolt, as residents of the neighborhood where Odair Moniz lived set several fires in the streets on Monday night, in protest over his death.

The PSP agent who fatally shot Odair Moniz was charged and his service weapon was seized, a source from the Portuguese Judicial Police told Lusa today.
